Key Responsibilities:
1. Preoperative Assessment
- Evaluate the patient’s medical history, current medications, allergies, and risk factors.
- Conduct physical examinations and relevant investigations (e.g., blood tests, ECG).
- Develop an individualized anesthesia plan based on the patient’s condition and the type of procedure.
2. Administration of Anesthesia
- Choose the appropriate type of anesthesia (general, regional, or local).
- Administer anesthetics and monitor the patient's response.
- Adjust anesthesia levels as necessary during procedures.
3. Intraoperative Monitoring and Management
- Monitor vital signs such as heart rate, blood pressure, oxygen levels, and breathing.
- Manage the patient’s pain, unconsciousness, and physiological functions throughout surgery.
- Respond to emergencies or complications (e.g., allergic reactions, cardiac arrest).
4. Postoperative Care
- Oversee recovery from anesthesia.
- Monitor for side effects or complications (e.g., nausea, respiratory depression).
- Manage postoperative pain and facilitate a smooth recovery process.
5. Pain Management
- Treat acute, chronic, and cancer-related pain using various techniques (nerve blocks, epidurals, medications).
- Provide consultation in pain clinics and manage non-surgical patients as needed.
6. Critical Care
- Many anesthesiologists also work in Intensive Care Units (ICUs), managing critically ill patients.
- They are trained in ventilator management, sedation, and advanced life support.
7. Emergency and Trauma Care
- Provide rapid assessment and resuscitation in emergency settings.
- Participate in trauma teams and acute care scenarios.
