Dispatchers have a variety of responsibilities, including:
- Answering calls: Dispatchers take incoming calls, including emergency and non-emergency calls. They should remain calm and effectively communicate with callers.
- Communicating with mobile units: Dispatchers use radios or phones to communicate with mobile units and ensure they receive important messages.
- Monitoring situations: Dispatchers monitor situations by phone or radio, and use mapping software to find the best routes.
- Tracking locations: Dispatchers track the locations of mobile units.
- Providing logistics: Dispatchers provide precise logistics for drivers to follow along on their routes.
- Coordinating delivery times: Dispatchers coordinate delivery times.
- Preparing work orders: Dispatchers prepare work orders for crews or receive work orders from crews.
- Preparing daily work: Dispatchers prepare daily work such as schedules.
- Dispatching personnel: Dispatchers dispatch police officers, ambulances, fire, public works, utilities department, and electric company to appropriate calls.
- Managing personnel: Field service dispatchers are responsible for managing personnel in companies such as electric utilities, construction, telecommunications, and transportation.
