Wayfair's Search and Recommendations team builds the core platforms and services that allow our customers to discover & buy the products they love. We do this by leveraging Wayfair's extensive customer and product data to deliver trusted and valuable recommendations in real-time using custom machine learning models. We productionalize these ML models as microservices and build data pipelines necessary for inference and model training.
Our platforms and services are used to power experiences for search, browse across multiple storefront and marketing channels and are called over a billion times a day.
We're looking for an experienced software engineer to join our highly impactful team to help us build and extend our Storefront team. A Software Engineer will be responsible for high quality implementation and consistent maintenance of systems that support auto-complete search behavior on Wayfair's sites. We have ambitious goals to improve this search functionality to better understand customer intent and map them to the most relevant products and searches on site.
Work cross-functionally with different roles and your team, such as product management, core areas of the business to understand the problems we need to solve, and solution against them in a globally distributed environment.
What You'll Do:- Collaborate cross-functionally with product managers, UX designers, and backend engineers to understand business problems and translate them into responsive and performant front-end solutions.
- Build scalable, maintainable, and highly interactive user interfaces using ReactJS, JavaScript, TypeScript, HTML5, and CSS3.
- Work with RESTful APIs and ensure seamless data integration with backend services.
- Use version control tools like Git for collaborative development and efficient release cycles.
- Create and optimize cross-browser and cross-platform compatible applications.
- Participate in writing unit tests and maintaining test coverage using tools like Jest or React Testing Library.
- Contribute to full-stack development as needed using Java (Spring Boot) and SQL, particularly for understanding and integrating front-end components with backend services.
- Collaborate in Agile teams and contribute to sprint planning, code reviews, and continuous improvement practices.
- Utilize CI/CD pipelines and tools such as Jenkins, Docker, or Kubernetes to ensure reliable delivery of front-end applications.
- Document technical solutions and maintain up-to-date knowledge of front-end best practices.
- 2–4 years of professional experience in front-end development using ReactJS and modern JavaScript (ES6+).
- Strong understanding of HTML, CSS3, TypeScript, and responsive design principles.
- Familiarity with backend technologies such as Java (Spring Boot) and experience writing or debugging SQL queries.
- Experience integrating front-end components with REST APIs or GraphQL services.
- Solid understanding of front-end state management patterns (e.g., Redux, Context API).
- Basic understanding of containerised deployment environments such as Docker and Kubernetes.
- Experience working with cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure is a plus.
- Knowledge of modern development tools and build systems (Webpack, Babel, NPM/Yarn).
- Familiarity with Agile methodologies and DevOps practices.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills to work across teams.
- Good documentation skills for writing and maintaining technical specifications and project artifacts.
- Familiarity with monitoring/logging tools like Elasticsearch, Grafana, or Prometheus.
- Understanding of messaging systems like Kafka or Redis.
