Guideline: Hiring a New-Age Creative Video Editor
1. Role Essence
We are not looking for a regular video editor who just cuts clips together.
We are looking for a storyteller a creative thinker who can turn raw, ordinary footage into compelling, original narratives. This person should bring their own voice, energy, and originality into the edit, using both technical skill and artistic instinct.
They must think like a creative strategist as much as an editor someone who can conceptualize ideas before shooting, re-imagine what’s already shot, and find stories hidden in everyday moments.
2. Must-Have Core Qualities
- Storytelling Vision: Ability to craft narratives from raw footage, finding angles, details, and emotions that others would miss.
- Original Thinker: Brings fresh concepts to the table irrespective of what has been shot. Can suggest pre-shoot ideas to improve storytelling.
- New-Age & Trend-Aware: Comfortable using new age editing fundamentals, design sensibilities, cultural trends, and AI tools to elevate the work.
- Creative Personality: Young, witty, quirky, full of energy, with a strong personal voice that comes through in their edits.
- Problem-Solver: Can work even in limited or constrained environments to still create powerful, high-impact edits.
3. Technical Skillset
- Proficiency in Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects.
- Strong understanding of typography and how text/graphics integrate with video.
- Good sense of cinematography basics (camera angles, shot framing, transitions, pacing).
- Knowledge of conceptual pre-shoot planning (what to shoot, how it will cut, how to maximize output).
- Familiarity with AI tools for editing, VFX, and creative automation.
4. Cultural Fit
- Gets a kick out of creating edits and bringing footage to life.
- Views video editing as art + strategy, not just a job.
- Has curiosity for tech, media, and digital culture.
- Confident enough to present and defend their creative choices.
5. Evaluation Pointers for HR
When reviewing portfolios or during interviews, look for:
- Originality: Does the candidate have edits that look different from standard templates?
- Storytelling: Can you follow a clear mood, narrative, or emotion in their cuts?
- Inventiveness: Do they show unusual angles, juxtapositions, or surprising creative decisions?
- Trend Sense: Are they using new-age techniques, typography, AI tools, and fresh music choices?
- Personality in Work: Does their work feel like it has a voice?
In short: We want a new-age creative storyteller who uses editing as a medium to express, surprise, and engage not just stitch clips.
